Tien Chen to face Verma as All England draw revealed

Top seed Chou Tien Chen will face Sameer Verma in the first round of the men’s singles at the Yonex All England Open Badminton Championships in Birmingham.

Chen is top seed due to the absence of world number one and defending champion Kento Momota, after the Japanese star was ruled out with an eye injury earlier this year.

Elsewhere, Danish second seed Viktor Axelsen kicks off his attempts to go one step further after falling at the final hurdle in 2019 by facing Thailand’s Sitthikom Thammasin.

In the women’s singles, Chen Yu Fei will open the defence of her All England crown against An Se Young.

The Chinese world number one overcame Tai Tzu Ying in last year’s event, putting an end to her two-year reign at the championships having won it in 2017 and 2018 and will be targeting her own double this time round.

Tzu Ying, meanwhile, opens her campaign against China’s Cai Yan Yan as the world number two and second seed will be looking to reach her third final in four years.

2019 men’s doubles champions Mohammad Ahsan and Hendra Setiawan will start their campaign against the Japanese pair of Akira Koga and Taichi Saito with the Indonesian duo looking for their third All England title, having won their first in 2014.

Meanwhile, world number one duo Marcus Fernaldi Gideon and Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo, the 2017 and 2018 All England champions, face an opening round tie against the Indian pairing of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty.

A Chinese pair has won eight out of the last 12 All England women’s doubles championships, and Chen Qing Chen and Jia Yi Fan will look to repeat their success from last year, when they face Bulgaria’s Gabriela and Stefani Stoeva in the last 32.

Japan’s number two-seeded Mayu Matsumoto and Wakana Nagahara will hope to give their nation only a third win in this discipline at the championships since 1978, and they start against the Dutch team of Selena Piek and Cheryl Seinen.

And world number one duo and All England mixed doubles defending champions Zheng Si Wei and Huang Ya Qiong open their campaign against the Indian team of Pranaav Jerry Chopra and Reddy N. Sikki.

China occupy the top two seeds this year and Wang Yi Lyu and Huang Dong Ping face the only Russian entry in the 2020 mixed doubles draw in round one, Rodion Alimov and Alina Davletova.
