No Wei! Malaysia superstar withdraws from World Championships

Four time YONEX All England champion Lee Chong Wei will not contend next week’s World Championships in Nanjing, China after withdrawing for health reasons, say the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM).

The world No. 2 is suffering from a respiratory related disorder and will rest up for ‘at least a month’ on medical grounds according to reports coming out of Kuala Lumpur.

This will also see the global superstar miss out on the Asian Games in Indonesia.

Despite speculation earlier this week, when he skipped final training, the 35 year old’s withdrawl does come as a surprise given his recent form on the HSBC BWF World Tour, which saw a 12th Malaysia Open Super 750 title and a last four finish at the Super 1000 Indonesia Open in the past month.

It means another year goes by that Lee Chong Wei misses out on World gold having won three silver, one bronze since first taking on the world in 2005 in Anaheim.

The Asian Games gold medal also continues to elude him – his best being silver some eight years ago in Doha.

"During this period of recovery, we ask the public and the media to respect the privacy of Datuk Lee and his family.

"We pray for his speedy recovery and look forward to welcoming him back at the Academy Badminton Malaysia," said BAM.
